iDownload is a download manager written in Objective-C using Cocoa APIs only, therefore it's designed for Mac OS X from scratch. You can use it to handle unlimited downloads at the same time, start/stop and resume/pause them, etc... As it is a GUI wrappper for the UNIX command 'curl', it supports both FTP and HTTP protocols.
